Brightness matters, but adjustability matters more. A good lamp can dim down for evening use or amp up when you're working on detailed tasks. Look for actual dimmer switches, not just on/off.

The mechanical parts should work smoothly without getting looser over time. Cheap lamps start drooping after a few months of adjustments—incredibly annoying when you're trying to focus.

Base weight needs to balance with the reach of the arm. We've tested everything in our collection to ensure nothing tips over when extended fully—a surprisingly common problem with poorly designed lamps.

Most of our selection now includes LED options, which last practically forever and use significantly less energy. Just make sure you check the color temperature—anything over 3000K starts feeling clinical rather than comfortable in residential settings.
