Table + Floor Lamps

Finding the Right Table Lamp (Finally)

Good lighting makes or breaks a room, but finding the right table lamp can be surprisingly tough. Whether you're hunting for modern table lamps or need an arc floor lamp to fill a corner, the right choice transforms your space. After years of helping clients navigate this particular design challenge, we've put together a collection at HORNE that focuses on lamps worth keeping for the long run.

I've got this Anglepoise that's followed me through three apartments and a house renovation. It pairs perfectly with a lamp desk lamp on my workspace and complements the modern floor lamps in other rooms. It's actually worth more now than when I bought it, which rarely happens with lighting these days.

Lights That Actually Work

A table lamp needs to do more than just look good sitting there. Our selection emphasizes pieces that perform specific functions exceptionally well while still looking great when not in use.

Anglepoise basically invented the modern task lamp back in the 1930s with their spring-tension system. The 1227 model remains the gold standard for desk lighting - the arm moves smoothly, stays exactly where you position it, and casts light precisely where you need it. It's a classic example of a lamp desk lamp done right. No cheap knockoff has ever quite matched the original's perfect balance.

Resident's more minimalist approach works beautifully in contemporary spaces where you want lighting that complements rather than competes with architecture. Their fixtures tend to use higher-grade materials than most - solid brass components instead of plated parts that wear down over time.

Louis Poulsen's PH series solved a specific problem: how to create glare-free light that still adequately illuminates a space. Their layered shade system directs light downward while creating this warm ambient glow. The ones we carry use the exact same shade proportions Poul Henningsen calculated in the 1920s - the physics of good light distribution hasn't changed.

When we displayed Santa & Cole's TMD lamp in our showroom window last year, we had people coming in just to ask about it. There's something about that combination of wood and linen that photographs don't quite capture.

Flos consistently creates lamps that designers initially question but eventually can't imagine living without. Their torchiere floor lamp designs are equally iconic, blending function with art. Their table lights have this sculptural presence whether switched on or off - they're investment pieces that anchor a room.

The Gubi Multi-Lite deserves special mention for its adjustable shade system. You can redirect light depending on what you're doing - more directional for reading, more ambient for entertaining. It was designed in 1972 but feels completely current.

Where These Make the Most Difference

Task lamps transform workspaces when positioned correctly - about 15" from your work surface, situated to avoid casting shadows from your hand if you're right or left-handed.

In living rooms, table lamps create these intimate zones that overhead lighting never quite manages. Pair them with modern floor lamps for layered, adaptable lighting. They're particularly effective positioned at slightly different heights throughout a space rather than perfectly matched pairs.

Bedside lighting is probably the most underrated home improvement. A good adjustable lamp lets one person read while the other sleeps undisturbed - relationship saver in my experience.

Most quality table lamps now come with LED options, though check the color temperature carefully. You want 2700K-3000K for residential settings - anything higher starts to feel clinical rather than comfortable.

These aren't disposable purchases - a well-designed table lamp should last decades or longer. The fixtures in our collection emphasize quality components, serviceable parts, and design that transcends trends. Worth the investment for something you'll use daily.
