Fredericia has become synonymous with high-quality, iconic furniture that defines the Danish Modern movement. Here are some of the standout designs that have made Fredericia a leader in the world of design:
Introduced in 1947, the J39 Mogensen Chair is one of Denmark's most beloved and enduring designs. Known as the People's Chair, it’s celebrated for its minimalist form, robust craftsmanship, and timeless appeal. Originally designed by Børge Mogensen, the J39 reinterprets Kaare Klint’s 1936 Church Chair into a simplified, modern expression that maintains excellent comfort and proportion.
With its single, gently curved backrest and perfectly vertical legs, the J39 embodies the essence of Danish Modernism—functional, beautiful, and built to last. The chair’s understated design has made it a favorite in Scandinavian homes, restaurants, and cultural institutions, including the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the School of Architecture.
As Rasmus Graversen, Fredericia’s CEO and third-generation family member, notes, "When you look at the J39, you might not see a very elaborate design piece at first sight, but looking closer, you can see how the proportions and the details make up a very considered design."
The Spanish Chair, designed by Børge Mogensen in 1958, is another Fredericia icon. The chair was inspired by a traditional Spanish design Mogensen encountered during his travels. Taking cues from medieval Spanish furniture, Mogensen reinterpreted the piece by using solid oak or walnut and high-quality saddle leather, which is tanned using a traditional organic method in Sweden.
The Spanish Chair is known for its signature wide armrests, which not only add to its beauty but also provide practical comfort. The chair’s rustic yet refined appearance makes it a versatile addition to any home, combining the best of old-world craftsmanship with modern sensibilities.
Fredericia's iconic pieces, such as the J39 and Spanish Chair, are not just functional furniture—they are investments in design history. Built with craftsmanship and care, each piece is designed to last for generations, becoming a cherished part of any home. The company’s long-lasting collaborations with some of the world’s most renowned designers, including Hans J. Wegner, Jasper Morrison, Barber Osgerby, and Cecile Manz, ensure that Fredericia’s legacy continues to evolve while staying true to its Danish Modern roots.
With a history spanning over 100 years, Fredericia remains at the forefront of Danish design. The company’s commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless aesthetics ensures that each piece is not only built to last but also imbued with beauty and meaning. From the iconic J39 Mogensen Chair to the signature Spanish Chair, Fredericia’s designs continue to set the standard for high-quality, functional furniture that transcends trends.
