Tableware

Reserve a spot for everyone with our stunning collection of everyday modern dinnerware. No matter the occasion – a birthday, holiday, or a Tuesday – we believe that “good dishes” belong on the table, not in the cupboard. When we think dinner and tableware, we think elegance and function.

From brilliant stemware to elegant ceramic tableware, we’ve curated a collection composed of modern tableware pieces from some of our favorite brands around the world.

What is the most durable material for everyday flatware?

Stainless steel is widely regarded as the most durable material for everyday use flatware. It offers excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and is resistant to staining and tarnishing. Stainless steel flatware is known for its strength and ability to withstand regular use and repeated dishwasher cycles without losing its integrity.

When choosing stainless steel flatware, consider the grade of stainless steel used. 18/10 stainless steel is a common high-quality grade, indicating that it contains 18% chromium and 10% nickel. This composition provides excellent resistance to corrosion and maintains a polished appearance.

Additionally, look for flatware with a thicker gauge, as it tends to be more durable. Flatware with a higher gauge number, such as 18 or 20, indicates a thicker and more substantial piece.

While stainless steel is the most common and durable material for everyday flatware, there are other options available as well. For example, titanium-coated flatware is known for its exceptional durability and scratch resistance. However, it is typically more expensive than stainless steel.

Ultimately, choosing flatware made from high-quality stainless steel with a sturdy construction will ensure long-lasting durability for everyday use.

What does a basic place setting consist of?

A basic place setting typically consists of the following items:

Dinner plate: The largest plate in the place setting, used for serving the main course.

Salad plate or soup bowl: A smaller plate or bowl used for serving salads or soups as an appetizer or side dish.

Napkin: Placed to the left of the plate or on the plate, depending on the table setting style.

Fork(s): Placed to the left of the plate. In a basic place setting, a dinner fork is typically used for the main course. If a salad plate is included, a smaller salad fork is placed to the left of the dinner fork.

Knife: Placed to the right of the plate. The knife's cutting edge faces the plate.

Spoon(s): Placed to the right of the knife. If a soup bowl is included, a soup spoon is placed to the right of the teaspoon.

Glassware: A water glass is typically placed above the knife. If additional beverages are served, such as wine, a wine glass or appropriate glassware is placed to the right of the water glass.

These are the essential components of a basic place setting. Depending on the formality of the occasion or the number of courses being served, additional items such as a bread plate, butter knife, dessert spoon, and coffee cup and saucer may be added. Remember that table setting styles can vary, so it's always a good idea to follow the specific guidelines or etiquette that is appropriate for the occasion you are hosting or attending.

What constitutes a formal dining place setting?

A formal place setting typically includes a more elaborate arrangement of tableware to accommodate multiple courses and demonstrate a higher level of sophistication. Here is what constitutes a traditional formal place setting:

Charger Plate: A large decorative plate placed at the center of the setting. It serves as a base for other plates and is typically removed before the main course is served.

Dinner Plate: The main course plate is placed on top of the charger plate.

Salad Plate: If a salad course is being served, a smaller plate is placed to the left of the dinner plate.

Bread Plate: A small bread plate is placed above the forks, often to the left side of the charger plate, along with a butter knife.

Napkin: The napkin is placed either to the left of the forks or on the charger plate.

Forks: A formal place setting typically includes multiple forks. Starting from the left side of the plate, the forks are arranged in the order they will be used. The salad fork is placed on the outermost left, followed by the fish fork (if applicable), and then the dinner fork.

Knives: The knives are placed to the right of the dinner plate. The fish knife, if served, is placed to the right of the dinner knife.

Spoons: The spoons are placed to the right of the knives. A soup spoon may be included if a soup course is served, and it would be placed to the right of the teaspoons.

Glassware: The glassware is placed above the knives, to the right side of the setting. It typically includes a water glass, a white wine glass, and a red wine glass. Additional glassware, such as a champagne flute or sherry glass, may be added depending on the occasion and beverages being served.

Dessert Utensils: If a formal dessert course is planned, dessert utensils, including a dessert spoon and fork, can be placed horizontally above the dinner plate or brought in separately with the dessert course.

It's important to note that formal place settings may vary based on cultural traditions and personal preferences. Etiquette rules can also differ, so it's advisable to follow specific guidelines or consult a proper etiquette source if you're hosting or attending a formal event.
