Accessorize and Equip Your Mudroom

Mudrooms are unique because they are not super common. Typically, you’ll find the mudroom in a farmhouse. It’s the back entrance designed to be a bit of a catch-all, where muddy boots, wet jackets, and tools and equipment can be stored out of sight but well within reach. If you have a small area just inside the garage door, you can also consider this a mudroom. Enclosed patios can also act as mudrooms. Whether you have an area that can be classified as a mudroom or not, you most definitely have an entryway. And both types of spaces deserve to be styled because they go well beyond pure functionality. Ultimately, you want this space to be useful, welcoming, and a nice sight when you come in after a long day. Here are our favorite pieces to help you accessorize and equip your mudroom.

Mudroom & Entryway Storage

These spaces are small, so storage has to be efficient and compact. It’s also helpful to consider storage with cubbies so that each family member has their assigned space to keep items. The String Hallway Shelving (specifically Unit H) is simple and minimalistic but sturdy and versatile. Hooks, shelves, racks, and shoe shelves make it easy to accommodate all outer wear and other daily essentials.

Another great option is the Stacked Storage system bookcase. We like the Con 8 option because it has ten different cubbies, some with cabinet fronts so you can hide some things away, while others can be used to quickly store bins.

If you’re looking for a more whimsical approach, use lockers! Mustard Made has the Twinny Cabinet and he Standard Low Cabinet. Both offer fantastic, locker-style storage with doors that lock (but still have ventilation) and shelves. They fit together effortlessly and come in a variety of colors to create a stylish, retro, and bright storage system the whole family will love.

Coat Hooks

If you have a lot of coats, scarves, and other items that hang, coat hooks might be priority for you. The Acrobate Wall Peg is a classic wall hook with a modern look. They’re a bit larger and feature an upper looped hook, as well as a lower coat peg which makes them perfect for homes with large families.

When we saw the Sequence Coat Hook, we fell in love with the ceramic construction and color options. They’re charming and small, but still very functional. These are a great option for smaller spaces, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Use them to add some color to your mudroom.

Another great option is the Dots Metal Hooks. These are a classic of the HORNE catalogue and the metal ones add sophistication to utility. They come in a set of five with varying sizes so they’re perfect for storing and displaying a variety of items.

Mudroom Accessories

Beyond the functional storage, you’ll want a few accessories that make life easier and keep you organized. Something like the Enkei Tray, which is made from stone, is plenty durable for catching keys and wallets, holding pots, and being a hub for tools and phones when they need a safe place.

We also really like the Rim Pinboard for keeping notes, photos, and schedules available to everyone. Hang it above a bench or shelves so everyone can be kept in the loop. We also love the idea of a laundry basket like the Essential Hamper because we know that muddy socks, hats, and even pants and shirts need a place to go before dirt and the grime of the day is dragged through the house.

Bellwood Umbrella Stand - Umbra Storage + Organization - White-Natural - HORNE

Some other mudroom essentials include the Postino Mailbox which is a perfect way to never lose mail, but also not have to run into the house. Just throw it into the mailbox and go about your day. There’s also the Bellwood Umbrella Stand which does its job beautifully with hidden hooks, separate compartments in the base, and handle so you can easily move it around.

Finally, we recommend having a mirror like the Lure Mirror hung on the wall so you can easily check your appearance before heading out the door. Pair that with the Slip Shoehorn and your day just became a little easier and put together.

The Best Rugs for Mudrooms

A mudroom and entryway need a rug. Whether it’s right inside the door, or positioned in an area to catch dirt before you fully enter the rest of the house, a rug is not only good for trapping detritus you don’t want dragged through the door, but they add a welcoming touch. We love the Heathered Shag Mat because its TerraStrand yarns and synthetic latex make it so easy to clean.

But if you want something a little more natural, the Athens Stripes Runner is a great option. Made from 100% jute, this rug runs the length of the hall, warming cold floors, while also cleaning easily.

Step Stools, Ladders, & Benches

Step stools and ladders are essentials to everyday life. Indoors and outdoors, they help you reach hard to clean areas, get heavy dishes off high shelves, and more. But they aren’t always the best décor. Which is why we recommend creating a space for them in the mudroom or entryway closet. If you’re looking for a great, stylish, and functional step stool, we recommend the Metaphys Lucano Stepstool or the A Line Stepstool.

Another thing essential to mudroom and entryway spaces is seating. But you probably don’t want a fancy chair. Instead, a bench like the Edi Bench or Milk Bench provides plenty of seating for everyone and complements the lengthiness of the hall. It also helps define areas. For example, set a bench against the wall, put coat hooks or shelves above it and some bins underneath.

Entryway & Mudroom Lighting

Finally, lighting. Nothing says welcome home quite like the warm glow of a lamp. To better see in the wee hours of the morning before you head out or as the sun sets when you get in, we recommend sourcing a good modern light to call you back home.

Because of the type of space, we don’t recommend a floor lamp. Instead, the Type 75 Mini Wall Light is a great option for mounting along the hall, above the bench, or just randomly around the room to light the whole space.

Use table lamps in addition to overhead and wall lighting. Place the Luver Portable Lamp on a shelf and take it with you if you need a lantern. Or use the AB Table Lamp for that dreamy, welcoming glow.
