The Moooi Common Comrades by Neri&Hu is basically a love letter to small-town life where everyone knows exactly who you are and what you do for a living. This Shanghai-based design duo created six different side tables, each one representing a different character from rural community life - the Emperor, Farmer, Seamstress, Tailor, Merchant, and Scholar. What's charming is how each 15.7-inch cube has the profession actually engraved right into the wood, so you're not just buying furniture, you're adopting a personality. Made from solid birch with this gorgeous red lacquer finish that lets little slivers of natural wood peek through, they manage to feel both rustic and sophisticated at the same time. The red color is that classic good-fortune shade you see throughout Asian design, which makes sense given Neri&Hu's multicultural background.
