Description

The Bestlite design company has a long history of prestige, thanks to the partnership of industrial designer Robert Dudley Best and his family's manufacturing firm, Best & Lloyd, founded in 1840. Best studied in Paris and Dusseldorf, where he drafted the first model of a Bauhaus-inspired lamp that was still foreign to the UK. But, after a mention in Architects' Journal, the lamp's popularity grew. Once Winston Churchill placed a Bestlite lamp on his desk in Whitehall, the company gained everlasting fame.

The BL10 Wall Sconce combines the original Bauhaus inspiration with a modern, sleek design - perfect for above a favorite reading chair, beside a couch or, in an homage to Churchill, behind a desk.

Bestlite

Some of the best designs come from designer while they were in their early years when it could be argued that acts of procrastination have procured some of the best modern designs out there.

Such is the story behind Bestlite. Robert Dudley Best created the original Bestlite lamp while studying to be an industrial designer in Paris and Dusseldorf, possibly while avoiding studying for exams (though we can’t confirm that). The lamp later became the first example of Bauhaus work in the United Kingdom and later garnered great fame and respect as a modern lighting fixture. Today, Gubi manufactures the lamp to the exact original specifications of Robert’s original design.
