Using Wall Mirrors in Your Interior Designs
The magic of mirrors is their strange versatility. Yes, they are a functional piece of home décor, but they can also be purely decorative or even serve a purpose beyond just a looking glass. Wall mirrors, but really mirrors in all their formats, add depth, reflect light, and offer something a little different in the gallery wall arrangement. On the surface, mirrors don’t seem to be essential, but once you hang one in the room, they more than prove their worth. To learn how to harness their power, read our guide to using mirrors in your interior designs.
3 Tips for Using Wall Mirrors
Though versatile, there are really only a handful of tips that will help you feel confident in your wall mirror styling. Above all, don’t overthink it; mirrors can slip into any space or corner. By putting a mirror in a certain place you are, most likely, not making a mistake. Instead, take more time to consider the size, frame design, and how it interacts with your lighting.
1) Mirror Size. Your mirror size depends on where you are placing it. But you can also mix sizes to create an intriguing and eclectic display. Small mirrors of all shapes are great on gallery walls to break up art. They can also be lined up in groups of three or more over credenzas and vanities to take the place of a larger mirror.
Large mirrors are great as statement pieces and functional, full-length additions to closets, entryways, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The bigger size adds drama on a living room wall, set between windows, or hung over a mantel piece.
2) Frame Design. Mirrors come with a large number of frame options. Everything from leather to gilded metal, the frame is a huge part of what makes the mirror match the rest of the room. Don’t underestimate its importance, but, again, don’t overthink it too much.
A fancy mirror frame might be just the thing to complement a more modern, clean-lined room. While a simple frame is a great option for a smaller space, or a room with lots of other furniture that might be more intricate. Mix and match frames and don’t be afraid of using various shapes. Let the mirror be part of the art.
3) Light Interaction. Perhaps one of the best things a mirror can do for your room is reflect light, allowing it to bounce around the space. When candles were used as a primary light source, they would often mount them in front of mirrors, which would push the light back into the room, creating that soft, glowing atmosphere. That principle remains.
Position mirrors where they will pick up the natural light from windows or the light given off by your table lamps and chandeliers. Working together, the two – light and mirrors – will brighten the room without the need for the overhead light or an abundance of lamps.
