Transcending Purpose, Preserving Culture: Nanimarquina

Eight tenets crown the nanimarquina approach to artisanal rugs: tradition, color, intuition, collaboration, honesty, experience, culture, and innovation. It is through these that each handcrafted rug produced by artisans in India, Pakistan, or Nepal transcends its most basic purpose. Whether it’s experimenting with color, designing with intent, or encouraging cultural preservation and the exchange of ideas, nanimarquina finds inspiration everywhere, making each piece a timeless homage to what was learned in the past, what is experienced in the present, and what is to be in the future.

Rabari Rug

New Zealand wool is knotted and woven together using the Sumak technique to bring the inspired art of designer duo Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien to life in the Rabari Rug. Featuring two patterns inspired by the tribal folk embroidery of India, the Rabari Rug collection is a delightfully artistic, handcrafted finish to the modern aesthetic.

Chillida Rug Collection

The Chillida Rug Collection functions as a museum and homage to artist, Eduardo Chillida. Featuring five of Chillida’s most beloved artworks, the Chillida Rugs reimagine the pieces in rug designs from Gravitación (1994) which was translated as a raised, silhouetted impression set against a single-tone background, to the pen and ink drawings of Mano and Figura Humana recreated in delicately woven lines. Each rug is studiously handmade from wool, silk, and hand-spun mohair to create unique textures.

Blur Rug

Designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec poured their love of geometric symmetry into the Blur Rug’s bi-color stripes and crosshatch design. The meticulously woven lines are created by purposefully mixing colors unevenly and inverting the traditional weaving techniques to reveal an optical illusion when the rug is viewed from afar. The Blur Rug is a beautifully decorative splash of artistic balance in modern living rooms, bedrooms, and commercial spaces.

Flora Bloom Rug

Designer and nanimarquina founder, Nani Marquina, collaborated with artist, Santi Moix, to explore the life cycle of the bloom and translate Moix’s art into masterpieces of color-blending and composition. Each selected color and shape is meant to recreate the lines of each drawn petal, as well as reflect the chromatic balance of nature. Bloom 1 and Bloom 2 can be paired with the Colors Rug, or used alone as an artistic addition to any room.

Telares Rug

Constantly striving to explore and push the boundaries of the loom, the nanimarquina team has created the Telares Rug in defiance of the commonplace. Combining the techniques used to create kilims and dhurries, the team achieved a distinctive interaction between the two which created a texture and rhythm of design unique to the Telares Rug. Full of delightful nuances, the Telares Rug is handwoven from Afghan wool and boasts a charming rustic character that perfectly complements the décor of any space.

Tres Rug

Nani Marquina’s passion for traditional weaving and respect for beautiful details is evident in the Tres Rug collection. Using the flat-weave of the dhurrie, the Tres Rug is composed of three different sections, each emphasizing a different fiber. Wool, felt, or cotton emerges in each section to create variations in tone, texture, and weave pattern.

Blend Rug

Five different yarns are hand-woven to create the spectrum of color hues and design variations found in the Blend Rug. The play of solid rectangles blended with a striped design creates an adroit visual landscape that expertly uses the basics of color theory to create a tradition-inspired kilim rug. The Blend Rug is available in three color combinations and sizes, and is perfect for large sitting rooms, bedrooms, and offices.

Tatami Rug

Nani Marquina and Ariadna Miquel come together to reinvent the traditional Japanese straw tatami rug in wool and jute. The organic texture and look of the wool combine with the natural durability of the jute to create a truly unique composition and feel made more brilliant by the bright colors chosen for the Tatami Rug series.
