Paper Lanterns Meet Modern Design
The paper lantern dates back to the Chinese Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), making it one of the oldest art forms still in existence. As this ancient craft has evolved, it has gracefully met with modern design in unexpected and beautiful ways. Just some of those examples can be found in the catalogs of world-renown design houses, boasting not only historical and cultural homage, but master craftsmanship that has elevated the paper lantern to new heights. Where paper lanterns meet modern design is a space of pure creative vision.
Lamella Pendant Lamp No.3
Using hand-folded PVC, the Lamella Pendant Lamp designers both mimicked the ruffly underside of mushrooms and created a hanging lantern reminiscent of the traditional paper lanterns. The Lamella Pendant Lamp comes in four shapes and sizes so they can be hung individually or together for a unique light display.
Phantom Pendant Light
Both ethereal and splendidly artistic, the Phantom Pendant Light has an expressive spirit that’s paired perfectly with its tranquil aesthetic. To create the paper effect, the Phantom Pendant Light stretches semi-transparent resin material over a steel skeleton giving the impression that the framework is pushing its way through.
Siam 120 Ceiling Light
Unapologetically futuristic, the Siam 120 Ceiling Light is reminiscent of a UFO while still creating the enchanting paper lantern motif. Moonbeam Table Lamp
Designers Lucie Kaas and duo Lim+Lu combined their expertise and undying respect for the art of the paper lantern in the Moonbeam Table Lamp. Using frosted glass to imitate paper and a ribbing design to replicate the delicate traditional folds, Lucie Kaas and Lim+Lu captured the spirit of the paper lantern, finishing it off with a large, enchanting, powder coated steel handle.

Nelson® Bubble Pendant – Ball
Originally designed my George Nelson in 1947, the Nelson Bubble Pendant is an exemplar of both the Swedish silk lamp and the traditional paper lantern. Using the same techniques that created the pendant nearly eighty years ago, craftsmen effortlessly meld a plastic coating into a paper-like texture and appearance then stretch it over the frame. The Nelson design is available in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as a table lamp, wall sconce, and tripod.
Viscontea Pendant Light
Designed by the Castiglioni brothers in the 1960's, the ghostly Viscontea Pendant Light translates the paper lantern basics into a delightfully dignified cocoon. A sprayed cocoon resin is cast in a web around the steel frame allowing a warm light to glow from within.
