Paavo Tynell & The 9602 Floor Lamp

Like the man who passionately designed it, the 9602 Floor Lamp holds a legacy all its own.

Designed by Paavo Tynell—fondly hailed as “the man who illuminated Finland”—the 9602 Floor Lamp embodies Tynell’s innovative artistic expressions by emulating nature, and elevating simple, organic materials.

Paavo Tynell

Tynell was born just before the turn of the century when the invention of the domestic lightbulb was just breaking into the market. One of nine children, Tynell’s education ended when he was young, but at the age of 16, he entered an apprenticeship at G.M. Sohlberg’s metalsmith. Six years later, he accepted a one-year apprenticeship with a blacksmith. Combining the two specialties, Tynell created a brass light fixture.

His destiny was sealed. Joining Ehrström, Frans Nykänen, Emil Wickström, and Gösta Serlachius, Tynell helped found the design company Taito Oy where he became the managing director and principal designer. Throughout his years as a designer, Tynell’s reputation grew as his Art Deco and functional lighting masterpieces started filling homes and commercial spaces across Finland and the world.

The 9602 Floor Lamp

Standing in a sturdy brass base, embellished with rattan, and topped with a conical shade in either wicker or canvas, the 9602 Floor Lamp introduces honesty and warmth to modern, domestic environments.

For 86 years the 9602 Floor Lamp has brought an enchanting spirit to inspired spaces, gracing living rooms, reading nooks, and bedrooms with timeless, simplistic beauty.
